san francisco police are investigating a sexual assault involving 49er michael crabtree. they say is happened in a san francisco hotel a few hours after the playoff game against green bay. crabtree has not been detained or arrested and he's cooperating with police. it's bad timing. crabtree is with the team in atlanta this morning. last night the team released this statement: we are aware of the allegation against michael and understands that he has fully cooperated with authorities. the. >>ers take such matters very seriously. fans are shocked to hear of the investigation. abc7 news reporter has more from the san francisco hall of justice. >> san francisco police say this alleged sexual assault happened just hours after last saturday's

match-up between the green bay packers. police say it happened at a hotel in san francisco. >> our special victim unit is investigating the case. michael crabtree has been interviewed with his lawyer and is very cooperative regarding the investigation. >> police are still putting together details in this investigation and are yet to determine if they will hand the case over to the district attorney. for fans who are gearing up for a sunday showdown in atlanta, this allegation is surprising. >> obviously it's news to me at this point. it's a bit of a shock. >> i don't understand why these guys who have it so good and are such big in the news right now, why they would do something or he would do something that could potentially hurt not only himself and his family, but the team. >> as a fan i'm going to back him up until it comes through. but right now it's unproved. >> we made efforts to contact michael crabtree and his

representatives but so far our e-mails and phone calls have not been returned. >> the 49ers take on atlanta tomorrow and here the surf competition is on which means a high surf advisory is in effect. abc news reporter allen wong tells bus the warning for anyone venturing near the shore. >> as the sunset on ocean beach in san francisco, surfers talked about the big waves and sunny skies expected this weekend. >> and that's what is so dangerous about this weekend. it is supposed to be really nice. people are going to want to go into the water and enjoy the day. >> but authorities are warning people to be aware of strong riptides and sneaker waves. waves that literally sneak up on you. >> i was out here a few years ago when the sneaker waves claimed the lives of tour three people in one day. >> i was out there and when it gets powerful, it's scary. never turn your back on the ocean.

>> it can make it hard for even the strongest swimmer to avoid the riptide. >> last year a really good surfer died. >> he died at the same place where the maverick surf competition is being held this sunday. in 2010 about 40 spectators were injured there after a rogue wave swept a crowd off the rocks. a sneaker wave is also responsible for the death of a man who died near point reyes while trying to rescue his dog on new year's day. >> as rule of thumb we don't go far out into the water. honestly, nobody, if it were warmer, i don't know. >> that's exactly what authorities are worried about. it's good to repeat the same warning you heard in our story, never turn your bark on the ocean. reporting in pacifica, i'm allen wong, abc7 news. 24 surfers from around the world compete in the the mavericks international tomorrow morning. yesterday eats surf was mild but the contest organizer said by tomorrow the waves will be at least 30 feet and intense.

>> we will put these guys on on their edge. they will have to bring an edge to surf these waves. >> beaches and cliffs are closed and parking is restricted in nearby princeton by the sea. some plan to provide live video of the events. san francisco police want to know what led to the death of a pedestrian on howard and market. at least two vehicles hit the victim around 5:45. officers say both drivers remained at the scene and they are cooperating with investigators. tensions erupted outside a san jose court hearing for a handyman accused of murder. ricardo hernandez shot and killed christopher soriano on the morning of new year's eve. hernandez said he was trying to detain soriano because he thought he was responsible for a series of car break-ins in his

apartment complex. during a hearing one of the family members struggled outside of the courthouse. hernandez blames his employer for not providing enough security at the apartment complex where he lived and worked. >> had they been proactive this would never have happened. >> he had an illegal gun, for god's sake, and he killed a man, a father of five children. >> hernandez' family has launched an online pegs calling to free him for jail and to raise money for his defense. he will return to court next month. abc7 news has confirmed san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi and his wife are being it stems from the incident on new year's eve in 2011. there was a neighbor who videotape her arm. she called police that led to his arrest and suspension.

the sheriff later pled guilty to false imprisonment and was reinstated. during the ordeal he harshly criticized madison for contacting police. the sheriff's office is on the lookout for a teenage girl who has not been seen since early thursday morning. the 13-year-old is an eighth grader at burbank middle school. she did not show up for class on thursday. her mother believes she left with her boyfriend, 23-year-old man. the man has contacted the girl in the past and is a friend of the family. work is set to begin at the bay bridge next week to fix the damage caused by a tanker. the tanker bashed into one of the towers on the western stand, damaging what is nonose the fender. the fender absorbed the impact so no damage was actually done to the tower, but it is expected to cost two to three million dollars to repair. starting tuesday caltran's crews will begin the work.

add mets now that he never actually met the fictitious lead on the field in stanford in 2009. this still photograph shows manti te'o during an off-camera interview with espn's jeremy shep last night e said it began on facebook and continued on telephone until he got word of her, quote, death in september. he also claims he was not completely sure that she didn't exist until three days ago when the perpetrator of the hoax called to apologize to him. the espn interviewer detailed his interview. >> were you in any way a part of this? manti te'o said to me know, never. i said never? he said never, not ever. >> takeio reportedly admitted when word got out in september that the woman had died that he tailored his stories to make people believe that he had actually met her. if you are hoping to be decked-out in 49ers apparel for

championship game departs early this morning on a flight to atlanta. san francisco resident corey royale has never even been on an airplane but this morning they will jump aboard a delta airlines flight to see the berth for the super bowl. as you might expect, corey is very excited about that. in san francisco mayor ed lee and the atlanta player have upped the anti in their wager. if the 49ers win lee will provide him with a taste of he'sa. and read will have to give him 25 pounds of coffee if they lose. the losing mayor would light up city hall in the winning team's colors and fly that team's flags for a day. sports reporter mike shumann manin atlanta. there he has discovered a city many of us here don't know that much about, and as it turns out, they don't know much about us either. >> san francisco has golden gate

conditions. and with the cool numbers, in fact, some areas once again below freezing. so it has been nice and mild in the afternoon but, boy, the cool air draining into the valleys and losing all that heat from the afternoon. 28 by the delta. 34 in napa. good morning, san francisco. warmer here at 45. 35 in san jose. just 31 in the livermore valley. down by the monterey bay we are talking 43 degrees. not bad there but you head east to gilroy, just 32 and 50 along the coast. so overcall we are warmer along the shoreline. 8 to 11 degrees cooler here. the highlights, a rough start this weekend. the high surf advisory by about 10:00 this morning. spare the air again today so it's a little hazy out there. we are look at a mild afternoon today and tomorrow right into next week.

we see an end to this pattern, though. the air quality, haze along the coast, and san francisco and east bay not looking too bad. double barrel high pressure so with the offshore flow a little fog in the inland valleys. we are also look at the particulate matter being really tapped in the atmosphere, allowing the pollutants to bring on the hazy conditions. a strong ridge right on through tuesday. eventually this will break down and as it does it brings the cooler temperatures by about midweek. the second half of next week you won't be looking at those numbers. 46 in tahoe. last week at this time it was in the mid-20s. remember we had that minus 17 saturday morning a big change in a week. 80 in los angeles. 66 in big sir. taking you back home we are looking at high temperatures today in the mid-to low 60s and even upper 60s. you should be about 66 in

abc news reporter martha raditz has the details. >> we know now one american has been killed. the family has been notified as this bloody assault intensifies. the algeria forces are moving in trying to end the standoff with the terror group once and for all. >> the assault is a deadly mission. the gas plant has reportedly been ringed with explosives by the hostage takers, not to mention all that gas. it is a dangerous mix. images on arab tv of the carnage. numbers of fluid. one report saying twelve hostages have been killed and more than a dozen of the terrorists. aside from the one american who was killed, a small number of other americans believed to be at the facility are unaccounted for. but american officials are sending a strong message. >> those who would wantedly attack our country and our people will have no place to hide.

winfrey, cyclist lance armstrong became emotional when he talk about his son. just past the midpoint of last night's hour-long interview, he described the moment when he told his 13-year-old luke that was using drugs. okay. we will have to get that sound to you coming up in a little bit. armstrong was criticized for not being contrite enough during the first 90 minutes that aired thursday night. san jose and oakland international air parts are removing the body scanners that produce a naked image of air travelers. the scanners raced privacy concerns immediately after they were produced. congress issued an order either fix them or remove them by this june. tsa said the company that makes the sonars was not able to come one a software fix to make them comply with the congressional man date so they are going. the head of the california university system is stepping

down. after stew years as president markka develop announced his resignation yesterday. he man's on to give the board until august to find a replacement. he plans to return to teaching law at u.c. berkeley. in a written statement he said the prior 18 months brought a state of taxing heather ishimaru use, though these challenges have been largely overcome i feel it is time to make a change in my professional lifestyle. he did not elaborate on his health problems. the number of freshman applicants to attend the system for 2013 marks a record high. nearly 175,000 students have applied to attend the university of california next fall. that's a 10.7% increase over last fall. the largest increase is at uc santa cruz with a 16.9% jump in freshman plants. u.c. berkeley saw the smallest increase at 9.7%. it is 5:36. come up next we are behind the rest of the country but now the flu has come to california.

>> i was just texting a few girlfriends to ask them if they got the flu shot before i came in here and they said i don't want to get it, every time you get did you get sick, but it will be worse if you go the flu. >> they said this year's flu season is shaping up to be especially severe. children are particularly vulnerable. there were nine pediatric deaths in the second week of january. >> the flu starts in fall and goes to early spring but january and february are actually the worst months for the flu. >> of the more than 12,000 specimens tested and reported to the cdc, 29% were positive for the flu. this doctor said pneumonia and influenza deaths are above the threshold and cause for concern. >> last year we weren't at this level. we are seeing a higher number of cases than usual. >> cause for alarm? >> it is. it's cause for concern and a great rain to go out and get your flu vaccine. >> the flu is also hitting the elderly hard. nearly half of those

lake tahoe is opening a giant half pipe today for the first time in five years. the half pipe is 18 feet high and 450 feet long. despite the intimidating dimensions, the run is designed for all levels of experience. the half pipe is inside high roller park, one ever heavenly mountain's theater rain park. it opens at noon and it is the only half pipe on lake tahoe's south shore. wow, the first time in five years that. speaks to the snow, i presume. >> yes, mother nature has not been helping out with that. we have the high surf advisory at the beaches that will allow for caution this weekend. as we head outside right now it's certainly another cold morning and it will be for the next several hours. we have to get beyond nine or ten before we start to warm up. look at the roof camera. the sun not up until 7:22, setting at 5:19. the seas building all weekend long. nine hours and fifty-seven

the high pressure against to move out of town, although nights will be warmer. a rough surf this weekend. the advisory going up at 10:00 this afternoon. spare the air again with the light offshore flow. the easterly winds allowing for a little haze down near the surface and more of the mild weather right into tuesday. if we don't see rain on wednesday, it's really the drop of temperatures that you will notice. the poor air quality if you are spending anytime up in marin or sonoma and along the san mateo coast. even along the beaches you will notice the haze out there. elsewhere not too bad. plenty of sunshine but the waves up to five feet right now from half moon bay, bodega bay and they will continue to build. the occasional sets up to 20 feet. strong rip currents. we are looking at large, breaking waves. pretty dangerous out there. it will be a beautiful weekend. in fact, a lot of folks probably checking out the shore. we will look for high pressure

>> step by step the camera builds a three-dimensional map of her teeth. the computer alerts the dentist if the section doesn't have a complete image so it can be rephotographed. >> it's very precise and very accurate. >> she said the process is typically quicker than traditional impressionings which must set in the mouth. >> we have to leave the goopy impression material that did not taste good in their mouth for three or five minutes. and if it wasn't a good impression, they would have to take another one. >> cost can vary by practice but the doctor does not charge extra for the digital impressions. as for ellen, she's anxious to see the results once her straightening is finished. >> oh, gosh, to be more confident and not have to worry about what my teeth look like and what people think, you know. >> i vividly remember getting those impression. carolyn said turnaround time also tends to be faster because the digital images are sent instantaneously rather than having to shift an impression. the information stored with the
